Drivers love the impala, from the powerful engines to the little fit and finish touches. The car is extremely spacious, and - especially for a reasonably priced car - fairly luxurious. Acceleration is strong both from a standstill and when passing at highway speeds. Gear changes are barely noticeable in the excellent general motors automatic transmission, which responds with no awkwardness or uncertainty. In 35-mph crash testing by the nhtsa, the '03 impala earned five stars (the top rating) for both the driver and front passenger. Side-impact testing also produce five-star scores for front and rear occupants. And, the ls gets excellent gas mileage at 19/29. Chevrolet touts the impala as having midsized exterior dimensions but big-car space. Only a handful of passenger cars seat up to six occupants, but the impala is one of them-augmented by 18. 6 cubic feet of trunk capacity. Not only are head, leg and elbowroom abundant, but the seats provide good support, coupled with pleasant cushioning. Gauges are nicely calibrated and easy to read, and controls are near at hand, unlike some contemporary american sedans, the impala feels solidly built. Steering with a relatively light touch for a big car, it's easy to drive and suffers no stability problems on the highway. Even when maneuvering through curves and around corners, the impala is a cut above the family-sedan norm. There's nothing especially sporty about an impala, but this sedan's suspension delivers a smooth ride that irons out plenty of the bumps, while retaining good control. For sensible family transportation, in a 4-door that stands apart visually from the pack, this impala is a car to consider.
